Science, Tobacco & You Website

The Science, Tobacco & You Website is divided into three (3) sectors.

  1. Looking & Thinking is the content sector. This section, written in both Spanish and English, provides the learner with a wealth of information. The opening page of each section provides a general overview with graphics, many of which are interactive, to help illustrate the concept.
  2. Asking and Sharing is the communications sector. Students can ask and get answers to their questions related to science, tobacco, and health.
  3. Teacher Resources are provided to assist in the implementation of this currciulum resource.







Looking & Thinking

Ad Smart provides information about interpreting advertising messages, as well as the opportunity to analyze advertisments. The sector assists students to distinguish between persuasive and factual writing.
Avoid or Break the Addiction includes background information on addiction, including how a person becomes addicted and the addictive nature of tobacco products. In addition to providing techniques to avoid or break the addiction, links to local and national resources can assist someone to break the cycle.
Cool Me presents games, puzzles, and interactive stories to help students feel good about themselves.
Science & You attempts to break the stereotype of science and scientists, by introducing students to a multiple of perspectives. The sector includes biographical information on some famous scientists and web-based resources to assist students in their exploration.
Tobacco: Past, Present & Future is a timeline that contains historical information specific to tobacco, as well as milestones in world history, medicine, and science.
Tobacco & You provides information on how tobacco and the tobacco industry affects your body, your environment, and your economy. The study begins with botanical information.
Virtual Laboratory contains laboratory simulations in the areas of radiology, hematology, and respiratology, by which the students learn about the human body and how to generate and evaluate data. The lessons begin with a tutorial on the normal structures and functions of the body.
Virtual You provides the student with a virtual model of the human body so that they may observe the effects of tobacco use over time without damaging the only body they will ever have.

Asking & Sharing


Frequently Asked Questions is a summary of the most frequently asked questions and answers asked by fourth and fifth grade students.

In the News contains summaries of archived news articles related to tobacco issues.

Teacher Resources


Lesson Plans provides teachers with an opportunity to share their ideas with other teachers and to find out what other teachers are doing in their classroom.
Teacher and Student Guidebook contains 9 Modules with 22 Activities. Each Module contains background information at the teacher and student level, alternative ways of assessing the activity, student pages with instructions, and extensions to extend and enhance the activities. From the Website, you can download and print portions of the Guidebook so that you can modify activities to suit your needs.


Program Information provides updates to the curriculum resource, information on training sites, state and district contact information, and the answers to frequently asked questions related to program implementation.
Contact Us provides contact information for the Center for Integrating Research and Learning and the director of the Science, Tobacco & You curriculum resource.
